# We Tested GoWish's Gift Generator. Here's What It Recommended.

GoWish's Gift Generator asks you to set an age and gender, then promises gift ideas tailored to that person. We wanted to see how tailored it actually was, so we tried it.

**What is the Gift Generator supposed to do?**

According to GoWish's own support page, you open the Gift Generator, set the age and gender of the person you're shopping for, and it shows you gift ideas matched to that. The pitch is personalization: a 6-year-old and a 60-year-old should see very different lists.

**What did we actually get?**

We ran it for 70+ years and again for 29 years, both set to "All." The lists were nearly identical. A FLASHFORGE 3D printer, a Mini Mic Pro wireless microphone, a Worthofbest bedazzling kit with 17,000 rhinestones, a squishy toy shaped like a peanut, and a scented candle all showed up on both lists, for a 70-year-old and someone in their late twenties. Whatever the slider is doing, it isn't changing the results much.

Then we tried Female, age 2. Alongside toddler-appropriate picks like a Fisher-Price toy set and a LeapFrog learning laptop, the fourth item on the list was a bottle of Clorox Toilet Bowl Cleaner. Heavy-duty gel, at that.

**Why does this matter for you?**

If you're trying to figure out what to actually get someone, a tool that recommends the same handful of items regardless of who you tell it you're shopping for isn't personalizing anything, it's just showing what's already popular on the platform and attaching an age filter that doesn't do much.
